Alpine Walk

The photo above is of the Crosscut Saw, leading to Mt Buggery and Mt Speculation

The photo here shows where the same track heads - past the Razor, and then on up to the Viking. The Viking itself can take all day to ascend. The horizon in this photo represents about half the distance the walkers have to cover.

Wollangarra and Mittagundi Fundraiser

The walk is a major fundraiser for Wollangarra and Mittagundi that occurs around Easter each year. It is a huge and exciting undertaking for the young people, winding through isolated and challenging country.

Generally five young people from Wollangarra and other young people from Mittagundi and Typo Station take part in the "Alpine Walk". This fundraiser event sees them walk 150 km through wilderness areas of the Alpine National Park from Wollangarra (Macalister Springs) to Mittagundi. Over ten days, these intrepid young people have to navigate their way across mountains with names like the Crosscut Saw, Mt Buggery, the Razor and the Viking, through harsh and unpredictable country. The high country of Victoria is stunning, but it can be very unforgiving. At any time of the year a lovely sunny day can turn into a disastrous snowstorm in a matter of minutes.

Their packs are heavy, as they need to carry all necessary supplies, like clothing for an alpine environment, tents, cooking gear, food and water.

The young people who are selected not only need to have the physical ability of this enormous hike and all the preparation involved, but also need to raise as much money as they can in sponsorship for Wollangarra.

Part of Wollangarra's objective is to help young people, who can't afford expensive outdoor programs, enjoy and learn to look after our precious mountains. The money raised from the "Alpine Walk" goes towards sponsoring these young people to come and be a part of our program, as well as helping Wollangarra with general running costs.

So, please support our young people as they attempt to support others in the community. Sponsor an alpine walker for the next walk!
