March 7 and 8th 2009 - Dugout and Silt

Our first work party of the year was a raging success. Combined with the Stage III pizza oven footings weekend, there were quite a few hands on deck as we tackled some long overdue jobs. During the ‘07 floods silt had gathered under the Stage III building/gear store and under the Outdoor Kitchen. This build-up of silt means that there is a high increased risk of termite invasions for both buildings - and nothing could be more disastrous for Wollangarra buildings. So we lifted the floor boards of both buildings to clear the silt away back to the original footings. Numerous treasures (and long lost tools) were found under both floors before the floors were replaced.

The dugout was in need of significant repair, with a section of the wall having caved in and a fair bit of silt deposit from the ‘07 floods. We had to start by taking the roof off so we could see the damage properly and fix the wall. After shoveling off a fair amount of hard packed soil and removing layers of corrugated iron, Wozza the tractor helped us to take out the sleepers that made up the roof. Unfortunately, once a little light was shed on the subject we could see the amount of repair work that needs doing, as the sleepers have rotted away more than thought. Not bad for 20 years, though! So a bit more work to do there, but we have a few months up our sleeves yet.

Such a big weekend, but we got tonnes done. Thanks guys!

May 24 - 25 2008 - Rota Loo and Tussocky Toilet

The work party in May was officially called “the POO party”. We foxed all the materials for the new rotaloo (thanks to Wayne for getting it and organising to get it trucked to the car park) over the river (thanks to Camberwell High for getting all the materials from the car park to the fox platform) and stacked them next to the building site near the shower track. Work also continued on the Tussocky dunny and the base was finished and materials ready to go.

April 19 - 20 2008 - Tussocky Work Party

The first one in April found everyone's energy focused on Tussocky Flat. The house was cleaned, the yard/fence was resurrected and Thomas-proofed, a start was made on a new dunny (thanks to Loz for the idea) and the old dunny structure was demolished and moved to the new site. The weekend was a raging success as Josie, Thomas and I were able to move in by the end of the party. Thank you so much for those who came to helped make it happen.

March 15th - 16th 2008 - Re-vegetation and Fox Runway

We had our first work party (WP) for the year last weekend.  Thanks to Gary, Krista and Peter for coming out in the heat and helping us weed and replant some of the bottom flat.  Work was also done on the flying fox and the fox runway and bank.

October 13th and 14th 2007 - Wollangarra Flying Fox Anchor

We got the fox anchor in...and all by hand. It took a full morning to get all the supplies (cement, gravel, two massive RSJ's, or really heavy steel posts and anchor rod) across the river, but many hands and all that. It was a smaller work party, which was really relaxed, but very successful with everyone putting in. Thanks to Matt, Marty, Annette, Tim, Phil and Biddie for all your hard work.

September 22nd - 23rd 2007 - Grass seed, Finish Bank Stabalisation and Fox Platform

It was a great show and a really productive weekend. We continued and completed the bank stabilisation, concreted in the poles for the fox platform on “the other side”, and a dedicated group spread grass seed on all of the silt deposits on the flat and also on the river bank and car park area over the river.

September 8th - 9th 2007 - Bank Stabalisation and Fox Anchor Hole

The third work party was a ripper.  We were blessed with the presence and enthusiasm of the Westbourne Grammar crew who single handedly dug the flying fox anchor hole over the weekend.  It was absolutely amazing how they all hopped in and got the job done.  It is a credit to Geoff Poynton, Warren, Trish, Peter and the 13 young people for giving up their weekend and applying themselves so admirably to the task. Another keen group of workers tackled the river bank and reshaped and stabilised the tops of the bank on the Wollangarra side of the river.  They collectively covered over 200 meters along the river from just near the old fox site around past the swimming hole up to the propagation house and chicken coupe.  Again it was a massive undertaking and was achieved with plenty of goodwill and smiles on faces.  While this was all going on a small group (Tess, Will and Mick) quietly chipped away on the other side of the river at the fox platform.  They started what is quite a difficult and very important job of making a secure platform and access ramp to the flying fox.  As usual at work parties there was an abundance of hearty, yummy food topped of by the roast beef meal (supplied courtesy of the Westbourne crew) on the Saturday night.

August 2007 - Various jobs

Our second work party at the end of August was encouraging with approximately 30 people coming out and getting stuck into the various jobs at hand. We did fencing, filled in the drop dunny, pruning of fruit trees, native seed collecting, gas bottle retrieval, wombat proofing the garden fence, cleaned the propagation house out, plus more. We had many new faces come along as well as some of the trusty regulars.
